Meet Janet! Owner and talent behind the camera of Pix-ology Photography (Bethlehem, Pa)!
How did you get started in this business?
Truth be told, I never set out to be a wedding photographer. I was happily enjoying photographing families and children. I was asked by a friend of a friend to shoot her wedding. I researched everything about wedding photography and found some amazing famous photographers to follow. That was in 2009 and I never looked back. I remember calling my husband on my way home from that wedding and feeling exhilarated, telling him that I found what I was put on this earth to do. I could not stop talking.
What is your favorite part of a wedding?
I love the getting ready portion of the day! I love watching a bride’s vision for her wedding day look come to life. I love the emotions of that time, mom helping her, dad seeing her for the first time, being surrounded by her tribe and feeling absolutely beautiful. This time can also come with a little nervousness and anxiousness, so I love to be the calming element in the room and help my bride to feel completely at ease. Groom prep time is equally as important, I love watching for emotional moments, and capturing them (i.e. if they exchanged gifts or cards to be read during this time, or a groom putting on an heirloom watch). Getting ready time is always filled with emotion, and that’s my most favorite thing to capture.
What song/music is in heavy rotation for you right now?
Do you really want to know? My current favorite playlist is my 90’s rap…We’re talking Dr. Dre, The Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac….I know, my kids think I’m crazy too…
What is one of your hobbies?
Well, aside from photography, I love to be creative. I crotchet, I sew, and is hanging out at Starbucks with a good book a hobby?
What is your fondest wedding memory-either from your wedding, if you are married, or from a wedding you attended?
My fondest memory is from my own wedding. My father is a big, tough guy. Rarely shows emotion. During our father daughter dance, he cried, I mean sobbed in my arms. We had the entire room in tears. I will forever remember that moment. To this day, you can catch me wipe a tear or two during the father daughter dance at any wedding I shoot.
What brought you to the Lehigh Valley?
Wow, I have been here for a very long time. I was nine when my family moved here and I never left, went to college, came back. It just feels like home. I think I will always be here.
What is your favorite restaurant to eat at in the Lehigh Valley? Your favorite dish to order?
I am a creature of habit. I have a few places around the Valley that I love and most likely will always order the same thing at each. What currently comes to mind (and I’m currently craving it) is Diner 248 and their shrimp tacos….So yummm…they also have a brownie sundae that I may or may not splurge on sometimes!
What is your best advice for a couple planning their wedding?
Do your homework! Definitely talk to friends and family and ask them for referrals to different wedding vendors they love, then research online. Look at reviews, places like the Knot or Facebook are filled with reviews. These are a great way to get to know your vendor and to see if they are a great fit for your day. One huge piece of advice I tell all my couples during the consultation meeting is to ask photographers they are meeting with to see a full wedding gallery. This is probably the best way to judge their work and style from beginning to end.
What does the perfect day look like to you?
I have several renditions of a perfect day, but being that it is so freezing cold these days, my perfect day looks like a sunny 85 degree day where we pack the car and head out to some sort of body of water, with my family and camera in tow, stopping along the way to visit antique stores and search for treasures…finding a new ice cream spot would totally be a bonus!
What is your favorite season and why?
Summer, 100%. I really have a dislike for being cold. I find snow to be pretty for about two minutes then I am completely over it. Now give me the hottest day in July in my backyard or at the beach and I am a happy girl.
What is a common mistake you see couples make while planning a wedding?
I think one common mistake couples make is setting their budget without doing their research. There are vendors at almost every single price point. It’s up to the couples to research and do their homework as to why vendors are priced at where they are. It’s sometimes difficult to talk about the cost of things, but so very important. Make sure that if you are on a set budget, that you are putting your vendors in order of priority to you and your day.
What is your favorite movie and/or book genre?
The Notebook, hands down. I mean, I am in the business of love and romance so it kind of makes sense. Don’t get me wrong though, The Hangover is a close second….Books, I love anything empowering, any sort of self-help, motivational read is what you will find me with (at Starbucks). I am currently reading Mel Robbins, The 5 Second Rule.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I love being home with my family. I find that we are all so busy, that when we get the rare day when all five of us don’t have anything on our schedules, those moments are priceless. These days will usually include a lot of game playing, Netflix watching and baking….
Do you have an embarrassing wedding moment? That happened to you/or that you observed?
I’ve had a bridal party ask me to do “the jump shot” (always a favorite request of bridal parties)… One of the groomsmen spilt his pants right in midair…made for some great laughing shots!
What are some of your favorite aspects of your business?
I love being my own boss, I won’t lie. The flexibility that comes with that is just what I need to live my best life. I love making people happy and I feel that I can do that through my work.
What do you wish couples knew about your part of the wedding industry?
I wish couples knew that we care as much about your wedding day as you do. The weeks leading up to your wedding day is filled with preparation. It may be venue visits or planning the timeline with you, or staying up all night imagining what shots you will take or planning what the best lighting approach for your ceremony. Also, for me, I hope all my couples know how honored I am when they choose me to capture their most important day.
What is the best way for a couple to prepare to meet with you?
Do your research, look me up online, google me, read my reviews, look at my galleries. I love when couples come to me knowing my style and my approach. Bring your questions, and your vision for your day, and let’s see if I am the perfect match for your day.
Is there anything else you would like our couples to know about you/your business?
I am my business, there is no team of people behind the scenes answering your emails or editing your photos. You meet with me, you talk to me, you work with me, and I am the one at your wedding. This brings a huge level of ownership and pride in what I do. I want your final product to be the perfect reflection of me and how much I care about your day.
