Meet Huma! She is the owner and artist of Cake as Canvas: Edible Art. Her wedding cakes are more than just delicious. Creating art out of food is a beautiful talent, and we are honored to share her work.
How did you get started in this business?
I always loved to bake for fun. When I moved to PA from Canada, I decided to go back to school and figured I should try my hand at pastry arts. I discovered very quickly that I had a passion for cake decorating and have been doing that ever since.
What are some of your favorite aspects of your business?
I love the initial consultation with the couple, getting to know them and what their story is and incorporating these elements into the cake design to make it as unique as them.
What brought you to the Lehigh Valley?
I’m originally from Canada and moved state side 15 years ago. We fell in love with the Valley and felt it was a great place to watch our kids grow up in. So my husband and I moved here about 7 years ago.
What is your favorite restaurant to eat at in the Lehigh Valley? Your favorite dish to order?
Currently love eating at The Vegan Butcher!
What is your favorite part of a wedding?
I love the themes and ideas for each wedding and how it beautifully incorporates into all the details.
What is your fondest wedding memory-either from your wedding, if you are married, or from a wedding you attended?
There were many moments from my wedding that were special but I distinctly remember being famished after the wedding ceremonies and ordering pizza very late at night, I still remember it to be the best meal I had.
What song/music is in heavy rotation for you right now?
I’m big into traditional Pakistani/Indian music, love listening to different podcasts and anything by Jain and Sofi Tukker keeps me in the zone.
What is your favorite movie and/or book genre?
Anything comedy is my favorite kind of movie. I have always loved a good mystery. These days I have been reading motivational/self improvement books.
What is your best advice for a couple planning their wedding?
Remind yourself to be in the moment, so you can take in all the beautiful details of your day.
What is a common mistake you see couples make while planning a wedding?
Not putting enough emphasis on quality over quantity. It’s important to focus on this to avoid disappointment on the actual day.
What is one of your hobbies?
I love to run and any opportunity I get to travel!
What does the perfect day look like to you?
A lazy day with the kids and my husband where we have nothing in particular planned and get to just hang out or go for bike rides in the summer.
What do you wish couples knew about your part of the wedding industry?
It’s not just cake, it’s actually a labor of love! A lot of time and effort goes into creating these works of art. From the initial consultation, to coming up with different sketches and then the baking and decorating.
What is your favorite season and why?
Fall! Love the crisp smell in the air and the beautiful leaves.
What do you like to do in your free time?
If I’m by myself, I love to hangout at a bookstore with some good coffee!
What is the best way for a couple to prepare to meet with you?
Book a complimentary tasting, call or email if you’re not in the area and I’ll work with you to create your wedding cake.
Is there anything else you would like our couples to know about you/your business?
All of my cakes are made from scratch and I only book a few cakes a month so I can give each cake the attention it requires.
