How did you get started in the wedding celebrant business?

In 2012 I completed my formal education and training and became certified by the Celebrant Institute & Foundation, with the hopes of providing couples and families of all backgrounds, traditions, cultures and faiths personalized ceremonies and meaningful rites of passage.

What are some of your favorite aspects of being a wedding celebrant?

I love the variety of my everyday: managing social media, interviewing couples, writing people’s love stories and ceremonies, brainstorming and creating with other industry creatives, cultivating Promise Ridge and dreaming up the next celebration for Bacon & Lox Society.

What is your favorite part of a wedding?

The Ceremony!!! I love seeing how even the most cynical people let their guard down for a moment to cheer on and celebrate the hopes and dreams for the couple starting their married life together.

Do you have an embarrassing wedding moment? That happened to you/or that you observed?

At the beginning of every ceremony I always introduce myself and explain that I am a celebrant and how I’ve been working together with the couple to create a ceremony that reflects not only their love and commitment to each other, but also their love and commitment to everyone gathered. Once when officiating on the top deck of a yacht, an uncle in the back of the crowd misheard me on account of the wind. He thought I said I was announcing to everyone that I was celibate. He was rumored to have shook his head while saying, “What a waste.”

What is your favorite season and why?

Having grown up on Maui where the weather is always the same, I really love the fall for all the dramatic transformations.

What is your favorite movie and/or book genre?

The Sound of Music.

What is one of your hobbies?

I love gardening and hosting dinner parties. I feel honored that so many people have resonated with Promise Ridge. Promise Ridge is the special elopement and micro-wedding ceremony space I have created at home in the Pocono Mountains. Growing and cultivating Promise Ridge is very rewarding as it marries my love of horticulture, dreamy lighting and heartfelt gatherings.

Seeing Promise Ridge develop and come to life to provide such special moments has been incredible. To give you a little more… There are three amazing draws that we have and are IN LOVE with:

The Living Wall, which is the backdrop for wedding ceremonies and vow renewals. The plants and greenery that it possesses maintains its natural beauty for any type of ceremony.

The Infinity Deck, where couples twirl under the twinkle lights for a first dance, enjoy cake and champagne and witness ceremonies from.

Lastly, our brand new pavilion where people gather for dinner parties after the ceremony. We are so excited for this new addition and the gatherings that will take place there!

Each one of these aspects are beautiful individually and are a huge part of my passion for Promise Ridge and the special moments that happen.

What do you like to do in your free time?

In 2019 I’m using my free time to raise awareness and generate legislative support to update and expand Pennsylvania’s Marriage Laws to include a whole new category of those who are authorized by the state to legally marry people, people professionally trained to create and perform ceremonies–Civil Celebrants. New Jersey was the first to pass this Civil Celebrancy Law in 2014 and I would love to see Pennsylvania look at that law as inspiration to modernize our laws.

What is your best advice for a couple planning their wedding?

Keep in mind the way you want to feel on your wedding day, and then work with and trust your vendors to help you build an experience that speaks to that vibe or theme.

What is your fondest wedding memory-either from your wedding, if you are married, or from a wedding you attended?

I’m fortunate to see so many intimate moments of kindness, bravery, love, acceptance and remembrance in the course of my work. I don’t have a favorite memory but instead can point to a really special interaction that I’ve witnessed at every single wedding I’ve been a part of.

What is your favorite restaurant to eat at in the Lehigh Valley? Your favorite dish to order?

Bolete. I will always order their signature oysters and anything featuring wild foraged mushrooms. I love everything they make, be it a bite or a sip. And save room for the butterscotch pudding for dessert.

What song/music is in heavy rotation for you right now?

“Where to Begin” by Ellie Schmidly. I first heard it when watching the LOVESICK wedding highlight film of one of our couples. It’s so dreamy.

What is a common mistake you see couples make while planning a wedding?

Maybe, trying to force something that isn’t a good fit for the weather/location? For example, I would strongly advise couples who are planning for an outdoor ceremony to consider other unity rituals besides the unity candle. It is very difficult to keep flames lit out of doors and if the flame goes out (and it will!!!) on the candle symbolizing your marriage during your I do’s….opt for a handfasting instead.

What do you wish couples knew about your part of the wedding industry?

Being legally authorized to perform a wedding ceremony and being an expert at creating ceremony are not necessarily the same thing.

What is the best way for a couple to prepare to meet with you?

Think about the vibe you want, what you want your guests to leave knowing–and we’ll work from there.
